Manhattan closed its doors to the public as the magazine and all its staff took over. On a stage beside the bar, the owner of Vague Harold Dasher took a spot, tapping the microphone three times to hush everyone.

Chris hurried into the bar and found Blake beside Ava, he tucked his moist hand into Blake’s. He kissed the crook of his neck. “Missed you.”

“Why are they wet?” Blake whispered into Chris’ ear.

He dipped his head to Blake. “I don’t do this in public.”

Blake looked at his hand, it was quivering inside his, shaking. “It’s okay.” Blake kissed him on the cheek.

“I need a drink.” Chris looked around, but nobody was staring, nobody was even paying attention to them. His stomach settled and his hands stopped shaking. He looked back at Blake, staring ahead, watching Harold Dasher on the stage.

“As many of you know, five years ago my son, Thomas Dasher created this magazine, and unfortunately died two years later. I refused to let his legacy die with him, so, I’m glad you’re all here, and I’m happy you’ve all made Vague your home. I’ve been making changes, over the past few months, and they’re to reflect the changes of the industry, changes of moving content online, and to everyone here tonight, I respect you.” He held a champagne flute. “To you.”

A server whisked around, handing glasses to the employees.

Chris freed his hand from Blake and took two glasses.

“One of them for me?” Blake asked.

“Of course.” Chris handed him a glass.

They clinked glasses. “Cheers.”

A tap rapped on Blake’s back.

Nicole stood with a champagne glass in hand. Her hair all slicked like a helmet attached to her head. “Can I have a word?”

“Sure.”

Blake followed Nicole to a table in the back beside the toilets. She looked him in his eyes and sighed, the smile on his face dulled.

“What happened?” he asked.

She tipped the champagne to the back of her throat. “It’s not looking good.” She wiped her lips, smearing lipstick on the back of her hand. “I’m fighting for you, but I can’t guarantee you’re safe.”

Blake scrunched his face. “What?”

“I just heard, Vanessa and Franco have almost made a decision.”

He clenched his grip around the glass, letting the stem break in his hand. “I can’t lose this? What will I do? I can’t go back to my website? I can’t go to YouTube, especially since I’ll still be writing for the website.”

She shrugged. “I’m sorry, but you knew permanent columnists and features writers were paid more.”

“What will I be?” He pressed his teeth together. “Some contributing writer?” he scoffed.

“Potentially.”

Blake pulled a waiter aside and grabbed the tray of drinks. Nicole reached for one but Blake pulled them away. “These are mine.”

“You do you.” Nicole left Blake alone with the tray.

Fifteen minutes passed as Chris stood around, drinking and making small talk with people who’d never seen him outside of the office before. He caught a glimpse of Nicole stood at the door.

“Hey?” He said, approaching her.

“Christian, I think congratulations are in order.” She laughed, stumbling in her heels.
